The Murphy Maverick is an all aluminium Microlight kit manufactured in Canada. It has a long range (with optional second wing tank) and is economical. Most have the 2 stroke Rotax engine. Some in the UK have the 2200 Jabiru which makes it more reliable with a good climb rate.

With two wing tanks it has 105 litres of fuel and uses about 13 litres an hour (Jab 4cyl) which gives very good range. It is not a fast plane cruising about 70 knots with a maximum speed of 100 knots. It is a STOL tail wheel aircraft.

A military test pilot described it as having no bad habits and being good to fly. The absence of flaps is not a problem it makes you become proficient in side slip and using a zig zags if you are too high on final. The plane has a very good glide ratio which is a safety feature giving more time for emergency landings.

The low stall speed of just over 30 knots makes it easier for beginner pilots to take off and land. This makes it safer on short runways. The relatively long body, high wing and large tail makes it better than most planes when dealing with a cross wind landing.

The MTOW is 430 kgs. Which was the maximum allowed for a microlight. This means it can't carry a full load of fuel with two people inside. The major draw back of the plane is its narrow cabin width which makes long trips with two people uncomfortable. The cabin height and length is fine for tall people and allows good luggage space behind the seats.

Its a good looking plane with a vintage appearance.

The price second hand is affordable there is a difference in price between 2 stroke rotax and Jabiru 2200.

Its a good plane for a beginner pilot just starting out that wants to practice landings or go on long adventurous trips. I carried passengers about 5 times for short trips. It has good leg room and shoulder room.

Learning to fly a tail wheel is easy requiring tail wheel conversion training and usually takes 6 hours, Once trained you need to keep practicing landings regularly until you feel your skill is dependable.

The menu links below list upgrades and fixes I made to my plane to make it a better plane.
